The São João Bridge over the Douro River was built close to and replaced the 1877 Dona Maria Pia Bridge (see separate entry). The project was the work of Professor Edgar António de Mesquita Cardoso (1913-2000), who was also responsible for the Arrábida Bridge. The construction period was 1984-1991 and the bridge was inaugurated on São João’s day the 24th July 1991. An elegant cantilever railway bridge, it has a three arch span (one of 250 metres and the two of 125 metres) and a total length of 1,029 metres. The prestressed concrete deck is 12 metres wide.
