Vila Viçosa has many churches of great historical and artistic interest which are well worth a visit. São João Baptista in the Campo da Restauração is certainly noteworthy. Situated across the square from the church of Nossa Senorha de Lapa, which has a very elegant Baroque façade in front of which is a beautiful fifteenth century white marble cross, the Igeja de São João Baptista’s main point of interest is the radiating roof structure, built in Moorish style. The interior has an interesting collection of religious paintings and statuary.
