São Gualter Church, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação e Santos Passos, was designed by the architect André Soares (1720-1769). It is one of the town’s most attractive churches and probably Soares last work. The twin towers were not included in the original plans and were added in the 1860s, as were the staircase and balustrade, to a design by Pedro Ferreira. Because of their great height and pointed tops, the church was the first in Guimarães to be equipped with a lightning conductor. The notable feature internally is the 18th century classically inspired altarpiece, painted to imitate marble.
