The beautiful 16th century church of São Gonçalo, overlooking the Tâmega River, was built on the instructions of King João III. It has many notable features, amongst them the facade facing on to the attractive small square, with its outstanding Mannerist portal, many statues, and kings gallery with the statues of João III, Sebastião, Henrique and Filipe II of Spain. The church is crowned by a tiled cupola. Inside, São Gonçalo’s image on his tomb has been partially eroded by the touch of devotees over the ages. There is also a lovely 18th century organ supported by gilded mythological figures.
