Approximately 16 km southwest of Penafiel, in the parish of Boehle, is the 12th century São Gens church, which is claimed to be the smallest Romanesque church in Portugal. Simple in design, which seems to add to its aesthetic appeal, it is just 7 metres long by 7 metres wide and 10 metres high. The commissioning of the church is generally attributed to Mafalda, wife of King Afonso Henriques and it has been a national monument since 1927. The entrance has three interesting archivolts.
