São Frutuoso de Montélios chapel is situated about 3.5kms northwest of Braga and is one of the few remaining pre- Romanesque buildings in Portugal. It was originally built by St Frutuoso, bishop of Braga, around the 7th century in the form of a Greek cross. Destroyed by the Moors, it was rebuilt in the 11th century and in the 17th century was incorporated into the Convent of São Francisco, which was rebuilt at that time. The chapel is now the only remaining building and contains relics coveted by Santiago de Compostela.
