The 17th century São Francisco Fort was built towards the latter stages of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668) on the site of a 16th century Franciscan Convent on the Pedisqueira summit. The fort, built in accordance with the Vauban principles, played an important part in the repulse of the Napoleonic invasion in 1807. Declared a National Monument in 1938, the site has subsequently been fully restored in what is regarded as one of the important projects of its type and now houses a hotel with 15,000 square metres of gardens. Well worth a visit, there is a fine view of Chaves.
