A Manueline Gothic structure, widely regarded as one of the finest examples of this architectural style in Southern Portugal, the building was completed between 1475 and 1550 and was the church of a former convent. It was designed by Martim Lourenço and commissioned by Kings D. João II and D. Manuel I, whose emblems can be found over the entrance. The leading Portuguese dramatist and poet Gil Vicente, who died in 1536 or 1537, is buried at the left side of the entrance. There are many interesting features which reward a visit to this large church.
