The original 14th century Gothic church was completely rebuilt in the 18th century leaving little more than the original portico. The splendid azuelo tiling to the chancel, depicting scenes from the life of St Anthony, is an immediate feature on entering the church, together with the profusion of carved gilt work. The meticulously decorated altar piece and the painted coffered ceiling to the sacristy are other notable facets of this lavish interior. The two storey cloisters with a fountain were by local architect Gonçalo Lopes.
