São Domingos Convent stood on this site, from which the sentences of the Inquisition were announced. The Dominican church was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, incorporating the original chapel portal, and is one of the main examples of Baroque architecture in the city. It was designed by architect Carlos Mardel, but the façade and chancel are the work of João Frederico Ludovice. A large part of the interior was destroyed by fire in 1959 and has since undergone restoration.
