Amongst the many notable buildings in Viana do Castelo is the São Domingos Church, which is located in the square of the same name and close to the Municipal Museum and the Praça do Gen. Barbosa. Originally the church of a Dominican abbey, Igreja de São Domingos was built between 1566 and 1575 in Renaissance style. In the Nossa Senhora do Rósario side chapel there is a ‘talha dourada’ altar, which is claimed to be one of the finest examples in Portugal of this intricate carved and gilded woodwork.
