Of the medieval Dominican monastery, built at the end of the 14th century, only the São Domingos Church and Cloister remain, the rest was destroyed at the end of the 19th century. The superb cloister now houses the Martins Sarmento Archaeological Museum (see separate entry). The church was given to the St Dominic Tertiaries in 1851 by Queen Maria II and became the parish church of São Paio in the 20th century. The Baroque portico was added in 1770 and the chancel enlarged c.1774. Features include the 18th century Neo-classical style altarpiece and the fine wood carving.
