São Carlos National Theatre, Lisbon’s opera house, is located in the Chiado and was opened in 1793 by Queen Maria I. It replaced the former Tejo opera house, destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and was designed by José da Costa e Silva, based on La Scala Milan. The façade is well balanced, and noteworthy features are the decorated clock and the Portuguese coat of arms. The splendid Rococo interior seats 1,148 and has five tiers of boxes. Liszt, Paganini and Saint-Saëns have been distinguished guests. The resident opera company was established in 1974 and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra in 1993.
