The São Caetano Sanctuary, about 7 km from Chaves, is regarded as the most important such site in the area; the pilgrimage takes place on the first Sunday of August each year. Whilst the sanctuary can be traced back to the Visigoth era, it is dedicated to a 16th century monk who was an exceptional Counter Reformation preacher and founder of the Theatine Order. The sanctuary contains seven images of the saint which are paraded on knees or feet by the pilgrims and there is also provision for live chickens and grain offerings brought by the faithful.
