São Brás Castle is located next to the city’s anchorage, south of the Praça 5 de Outubro. It was originally commissioned in 1552 and is sited on a promontory dominating the coast to defend the area against the many pirate raids that took place during those times. It is polygonal in structure and designed by the Italian, Tommaso Benedetto. A typical Renaissance fortress, it underwent several unfortunate changes and additions during the 19th century, yet, it remains an important sight in the city’s landscape, which is not to be missed. The fort serves today as a base for the Portuguese navy.
