The São Bernardo, or Our Lady of Assumption Convent, was the last Cistercian complex to be built in Portugal; it is in Tabosa approximately 13km northwest of Sernancelhe. Built in 1685, the king ordered the nuns to be transferred to Setúbal in 1771, they returned in 1779 and the buildings were repaired. The convent remained open until 1850, when the last nun died, but the noviciate closed after the banning of religious orders in 1834. The convent buildings are in ruin, but you can see the cloister with fine Tuscan columns and the church has some 17th and 18th century carvings.
