Famous for its tiled murals, São Bento Station was built on the site of the former Convent of S. Bento de Avé-Maria and opened in 1910. The architect was Marques da Silva, but it was Jorge Colaço (1864-1942) who created the immense tiled murals in the main concourse. Consisting of more than 20,000 tiles, these illustrate historical events and add great artistic beauty to the station. Services to and from the station are limited, but it is worth the trip to see the murals.
