Rio Caldo is located approximately 23 km northeast of Póvoa de Lanhoso, and 3 km northwest of Rio Caldo, is the São Bento da Porta Aberta Sanctuary. Since the mid 18th century one of the more important places of pilgrimage in Portugal, the 20th and 21st March, 10th and 11th July and 10th and 15th August are the days of pilgrimage. The sanctuary was built in homage to St Benedict and scenes from his life are depicted in azulejo panels. Little is known of its history although, according the 1640 testimony of Tomé Pires, it dates from the 17th century.
