This large white building complex is the home of the Portuguese parliament and houses the official residence of the prime minister. The original building was a Benedictine monastery erected in 1598, which was replaced by a new monastery in the 17th century but, before completion, the 1755 earthquake caused severe damage. After the Liberation Revolution of 1820 and the suppression of religious orders it became the parliament building. The grandiose interior may be viewed during Parliamentary sessions or during temporary exhibitions. The building is also known as the Palácio da Assembleia Nacional and the Palácio da República.
