São Bartolomeu de Messines is famous for being the birthplace of the poet João de Deus (1830-1896). His text of "Cartilha Maternal" was widely used to teach reading and writing at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The town, situated in a long, fertile valley, retains all the charm of a typical Algarve town. Some of São Bartolomeu de Messines’ streets, such as Rua do Remexido, which is spanned by an arch, are particularly appealing. The two houses in which the poet lived are marked by plaques.
