Legend has it that in 1282, in an earlier chapel on this site devoted to the same saint, King Dinis married the 12 year old Isabel of Aragon, giving her Trancoso as a wedding gift. King Dinis was also known as the ‘Farmer King’ and the ‘Poet King’ whilst Isabel eventually became a nun and was canonised in 1625. The present 18th century Capela de São Bartolomeu lies outside the town walls and is architecturally interesting being octagonal on plan with six roof slopes. Inside it has a carved and painted wooden altarpiece.
