Situated on the picturesque Praça do Infante Dom Henrique, this attractive building with four arches has a dark history. It was here during the 15th century where the first slaves, captured and transported from Africa, were sold. As the major sponsor of these expeditions, Prince Henry the Navigator (after whom the square is named) received one fifth of the selling price of the slaves. On a wall of the building there is a stone dating from the 17th century bearing the coat of arms of the Marquês de Nisa. Vasco da Gama, discoverer, was the first Marquês de Nisa.
