The original settlement of Nazaré was in Sitio, on top of the cliffs 110 metres above the town. It can be reached by funicular, although you can also ascend by car or by a steep cobblestone path known as the Ladeira de Sítio. The location provided protection from raids by Algerian, French, English and Dutch pirates that continued until the beginning of the 19th century. The panoramic views from the Promontorio do Sitio of Nazaré and the coast are spectacular and should not be missed. The area is now predominantly residential, but is also a place of pilgrimage.
