Sines was once a fishing town, but it has been transformed by tourism and industry. As well as the castle overlooking the bay, there are several interesting monuments in the town’s historical centre. The former governor’s palace (Paço do Alcaide-Mor), where Vasco da Gama, the great Portuguese navigator who discovered the sea route to India, was born in the 15th century, the parish church and, nearby, the chapel of Nossa Senhora das Salvas, which was rebuilt on the orders of Vasco da Gama in the 16th century.
