Running outwards from the castle to enclose the old town are the remains of Silves city walls. Originally, the town’s defences consisted of three lines of ramparts. All that remains today of these defensive walls are stretches built of red sandstone and taipa and a number of towers. These towers were built to protect the almedina (residential area) of Silves. The most imposing, the Turret of the City Gate, consists of a barbican which gives access, by way of two corridors, to the city. Inside the tower are two rooms and annexes which once housed the Municipal Council.
