Built by Almoravid Arabs, the imposing 11th century Silves Castle serves as a reminder of the Islamic civilisation in the Algarve. Having been classified as a national monument since 1910, it is the largest and best conserved castle in the Algarve. The imposing main gate is protected by two towers. Underground food stores, the Moorish Cistern and a well named the Cistern of the Dogs are just some of the treasures inside. Legend has the castle haunted by a Moorish maiden lamenting her lover’s suicide in the well. This is one of the visits that you cannot afford to miss.
