The She Changes net sculpture by the American sculptress, Janet Echelman, is an example of Matosinhos’ commitment to innovative modern art of quality. Inaugurated in 2005 and constructed of Tenara architectural net fibre, it honours local fishermen and quickly became known as the ‘Giant Anemone’. Janet Echelman was also commissioned for the contract for the September 11th memorial, in New York. It is 50 metres tall and 150 metres x 150 metres, cost 1.25 million euros and is illuminated at night. It consists of an enormous net which undulates and billows in the sea breezes on the Matosinhos waterfront.
