The Setubal Museum is housed in the quarters of the Convento de Jesus and contains a large collection of 16th century Portuguese and Flemish paintings. The important Portuguese painter, Jorge Afonso and his pupils and followers Gregório Lopes, Garcia Fernandes and Cristóvão Figueiredo are represented and their remarkable 14 panel altar piece for the Convento is on display. The museum also exhibits local archaeological finds, antique tiles, coins, sacred silver gold and silver plates and a 15th century crystal and gilt processional cross. A section is devoted to the locally born 18th century romantic poet Manuel du Bocage.
