The beautiful Seteais Palace, also known as the Palace of the Seven Sighs, was built in the last quarter of the 18th century by the Dutch Consul, Daniel Gildemeester, on land granted to him by the Marquis of Pombal. It was extended early in the 19th century. The triumphal arch (1802), which connects the two wings, commemorates a visit by Joao VI. The Treaty of Sintra, the surrender declaration of the French forces, was signed here in 1808. Situated almost opposite the Regaleira Palace, it has magnificent views of the Pena Palace and is now a luxury hotel.
