Located on the River Zêzere in beautiful surroundings, approximately 50 km northeast of Tomar, is the ancient town of Sertã. It is said to owe its name to the wife of a noble Lusitanian, who is alleged to have attacked invading Romans with a frying pan (sertã) of boiling oil. Attractions include the castle ruins, the 15th century mother church with rich gilded woodwork and 16th/17th century tiles and the Misericórdia church. An attractive 16th century pillory bears a Maltese cross, armillary sphere and the town’s coat of arms. There are plenty of opportunities for water sports in the area.
