Located about 22 km east of Arganil, the Serra do Açor Protected Area is 346 hetares (855 acres) in extent and includes the Margaraça Woodlands. The Fraga da Pena is one of the most picturesque places, where water falls from about 70 m high to form a lovely natural swimming pool. The symbol of the protected area is the goshawk, a bird of prey after which this mountain range is named, other species include the screech-owl and hawk; wild boar and genet inhabit the area. The characteristic schist stone is the basic building material used in the region.
