The entrance to the Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve is about 9 km northeast of Penamacor. It is suggested you call at the head office before visiting, where you can get advice on where to go at various times of the year. The reserve is approximately 20 square kilometres in extent and is one of the last refuges of the endangered Iberian lynx. The trails are signposted and the wild life includes the wild boar, otters, wolves, the Egyptian mongoose, golden eagles and the black vulture. There are also reptiles and amphibians such as the ladder snake and Iberian green frog.
