North of the Serra Branca lies the Serra da Dormida, another range of softly undulated low hills. These hills also afford outstanding views. They are covered with beech trees, Japanese cedars, heather and other endemic shrubs, making them an attractive place to visit. The highest peak is the Pico do Timão at 398 metres and the second highest is the Pico do Facho at 371 metres, both located in the north-eastern and centre part of the Serra da Dormida. Below the Pico, on the north side, stretches the island’s largest connected woodland area on a mistério (lava field).
