The Serra Branca hills afford outstanding views of the island and sea. A wind park covers some sections. This was erected as an EU project with the assistance of German companies and produces about one fifth of the island’s electricity consumption. The highest peak is the 360 m high Pico Caldeirinha, a small green-covered crater at the entrance of the Serra Branca. It is possible to walk to the top from where magnificent panoramic views can be enjoyed of the rest of the central island group, namely Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial.
