Serpa is located just a few kilometres from the Guadiana River, and is known to have been settled since Roman times, around 2,000 years ago. In 1232, the region was captured from the Moors by King Sancho II. During the reign of King Dinis, in 1295, Serpa was granted its first charter and the castle was rebuilt and enlarged. The layout of its ancient streets, with large squares, gives Serpa a highly distinctive character. Beyond the town walls, on the road to Beja, St. Sebastian is a 16th century church built in a mix of Manueline and Moorish architectural styles.
