Sernancelhe was founded in the 10th century on the banks of the River Tavora, little remains of the castle wall but a small battlemented house has been built into the remnants. There is an interesting monument to the eminent 16th century missionary to Japan, Father João Rodrigues, who was born in Sernancelhe. Behind the Igreja Matriz is the grand Baroque Solar dos Carvalhos where a local noble family lived in the 18th century. Ferreirim, 7 km to the north, has an interesting church and, at 11 km, the Romanesque church of Fonte Arcada has an interesting façade.
