The Carmelite Santuário da Senhora do Pilar is located near the Lanhoso castle on top of Mount Pilar. It was built in 1680 by André da Silva Machado, a wealthy Porto merchant, using stone from the fortress which by then had lost its strategic importance. The influence of the nearby Bom Jesus Sanctuary in Braga is obvious, with the multi-coloured wooden sculptured groups of its chapels of the Holy Way and its staircase. In the vicinity, the remains of a Roman fort have also been preserved.
