In the Rua da Misericórdia are two churches almost adjoining, both worthy of a visit. One is the Igreja da Senhora das Candeias (which also houses a museum of Sacred Art). This is a building of some architectural merit. The interior is equally interesting, having a vaulted ceiling of carved wood in the Rococo style. The walls are completely covered with polychrome tiles (azuelos) dating from 1682. The main chapel has a star vault, decorated with paintings of the Annunciation and the Epiphany.
