The Nossa Senhora da Piedade Carmelite Sanctuary is on a hill near the Lousã castle (see separate entry). It is surrounded by olive groves and dense vegetation and is also on the edge of the River Arouce. The sanctuary consists of three chapels, the 15th century St John, the first to be built, Our Lady of Mercy and Our Lady of Agony. The sanctuary has limestone painted sculptures of São Paio and Saint John the Evangelist and a pilgrimage takes place in May each year. There are several delightful natural river swimming pools nearby.
