Just northeast of Melgaço, on the road to Chaviães, is the interesting mid-13th century Romanesque Chapel of Our Lady of Orada. Its portal has decorated archivolts and the cornices have human figures, animals and geometrical motifs. The side tympanum has a tree of life with animals and King Solomon’s knots. The brackets and the cornices, on the north and south façades, suggest that the church had porches at some time in the past. The chapel lies close to the northern border with Spain on the old medieval route, whilst its sister chapel in Albufeira is at the southern extremity of Portugal.
