About 3 km north of Chaves, at Outeiro Sec, is the Nossa Senhora da Azinheira Church, considered one of the most perfect examples of Romanesque religious architecture in Portugal. Although the earliest reference is dated 1273, it is believed that the church was actually built in the 12th century under the Knights Templar. There are almost 100 anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures decorating the exterior. Inside, the church has no aisle but once had frescos which were removed and taken to museums in Porto and Lisbon. Some were returned in 1986 and can be seen in the museum in Chaves.
