This monument was built in the 18th century and, legend says, marks the place where a statue of Jesus, minus an arm, was washed up in the year 124 AD. The Padrão do Bom Jesus de Matosinhos is also known as ‘Senhor do Espinheiro’ (after the beach where it was found) or as ‘Senhor da Areia’. Some say it is where the missing arm was found after 50 years. The legend continues that an old lady rescued a piece of wood from her fire, which her daughter, until then dumb, declared was the missing arm. It was subsequently found to fit exactly.
