The history of Cascais is closely associated with the sea and the Museu de Mar –Rei Dom Carlos, which is located just to the north of the Parque do Marechal Carmona, reflects this link. There is a natural history section devoted to fish, mammals, birds, molluscs and fossils and others dealing with ethnology and seafaring. Amongst the interesting items are exhibits of treasures rescued from nearby wrecks, model boats, fishermen’s clothing and rare old maps. One of these, a 16th century map by Georgius Braunnius, shows Cascais and its bay. There is also a specialist library.
