The granite Romanesque Igreja do Salvador is located about 4 km from Amarante on the road to Vila Chão do Marão. It was once the church of a Benedictine Convent and on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Founded in the 12th century, it remains virtually unaltered; the nuns were eventually moved to Porto. Its features include a bell tower (with only a single bell these days), a gilt and polychrome altarpiece, painted panels depicting St Peter and St Paul, and a double archivolt portal.
