The picturesque and unspoilt town of Sardoal, with its old streets paved with pebble stones from the river, lies 8 km north of Abrantes. The 16th century playwright Gil Vicente was born in Sardoal and the façade of the Capelo do Espirito in the Praça da Republica has an 18th century tile panel honouring him. Elsewhere, the 16th century parish church of São Tiago e São Mateu contains a painting of Christ with a crown of thorns by the 16th century painter, known as the Master of Sardoal who was born here.
