Nossa Senhora da Conceição is the patron saint of Ferreira do Alentejo. The saint is venerated in the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which has a small stone statue of the Virgin Mary. According to legend, this statue was transported by Vasco da Gama on his journey to India. The interior is covered with azulejo tile panels depicting religious scenes in the saint’s life. Although the feast of the patron saint takes place on December 8, various pilgrimages are made to the Sanctuary throughout the year.
