Located in the old quarter of Valença do Minho within the fortress, the 18th century St Stephen’s Church was rebuilt in 1792 with the financial assistance of Queen Maria I (1777-1816). Nothing remains of the original 13th century Romanesque church. The façade is Renaissance and inside there are six 16th century panels depicting scenes from the life of St Stephen. Other items of interest are a 16th century portrait of the Virgin Mary and the unusual oak 15th century Bishop’s throne.
