The Convento de Santo António was founded in 1598 by the Franciscan Order. The present building is a restoration /enlargement started in 1601; it is a National Monument. Externally, the church is quite plain, the portico has a triangular pediment with the Cross of Christ and interest is added by the bell tower. Internally, 18th century tiled panels depict scenes from the life of St Anthony, the ‘Preaching to the Fish’ and the ‘Miracle of the Mule’. The double storey rectangular cloister is a feature, with Truscan columns on the upper floor and the lower floor decorated with 18th century tiles.
