The Santo António dos Capuchos Convent was originally built by the Mendicant Friars of St. Francis in 1562 on the instructions of Fernando de Menezes, head of the Order of Christ. Queen Maria I established a school here in 1779 under Brother José de Dominguiso, which was funded by the town council. Following the suppression of religious orders in 1834, as was the case with many other convents, the buildings were taken over by the army and became a military hospital and barracks. They currently house the Castelo Branco Infantry Regiment. The present Mannerist style buildings date from the 18th century.
