The village of Santo António is located 7 km west of Funchal and its large church is said to be the pride of its inhabitants. Its attractive twin towers with decorative pyramid shaped roofs and the interesting courtyard in which it stands justify this pride. The old church was damaged in the 1748 earthquake and, with an ever-increasing population, an enlarged church with six altars was built. The present church was upgraded between 1922 and 1928 and at this time the large clock, which regulates village life, was installed in one of the towers.
